Scientists: The high antioxidant content of Andean berry wine makes it a potential cancer cure

Andean berry (Vaccinium meridonale Sw) is a common ingredient for wine. A study, published in Journal of Medicinal Plants Research, showed that dealcoholized Andean berry wine can be used for the prevention and treatment of cancer. They determined this by looking into the antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity of Andean berry wine.

  • Studies have shown that Andean berry is rich in polyphenols, anthocyanins, and phenolic acids that contribute to its antioxidant activity.
  • Antioxidants are often lost in most food treatment processes. However, it has been observed that antioxidant content is retained even after fermentation, allowing for their long-term preservation.
  • The researchers used different maceration methods to determine the method that would best preserve antioxidant content. These methods were preheating, mechanical maceration, and a combination of both.

Results of the study show that the different Andean berry wines all exhibited antioxidant activity. In addition to this, dealcoholized wine also inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells. These results suggest that dealcoholized Andean berry wine has potential in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
