King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis likely to force him out of the public eye for the foreseeable future

Charles III’s recent hospital stay to treat an enlarged prostate resulted in a new diagnosis – cancer. This comes less than 18 months after his coronation as king of the U.K. and the 14 other Commonwealth realms that have Charles III as its monarch and head of state.

While King Charles was reportedly positive about the diagnosis, questions have been raised about his royal duties and who will take over. But the palace has already said in a statement that most of the king’s public engagements will have to be canceled.

“Regrettably, a number of the king’s forthcoming public engagements will have to be rearranged and postponed. His Majesty would like to apologize to all those who may be disappointed or inconvenienced as a consequence,” said Buckingham Palace in a statement, adding that the king “looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

As head of state of the United Kingdom, the king is expected to continue doing paperwork and holding private meetings, including meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who said that he is in “regular contact” with the king.

Other members of royal family to take over king’s duties

The king’s spouse Queen Camilla, his eldest son William the Prince of Wales, his sister Princess Anne and his youngest brother Prince Edward the Duke of Edinburgh can stand in on his behalf if he is too ill. While the king is recovering, the queen will continue attending public engagements, Buckingham Palace said.

While royal experts say King Charles’ cancer diagnosis is not likely to “destabilize the House of Windsor,” there remain significant challenges and pressures facing the royal family. His duties as a constitutional monarch – although largely ceremonial – can be “exhausting,” to say the least, especially at an age when most of his contemporaries are well into retirement.

CBS News reported that Prince William had just returned to his public royal duties after taking weeks off while his wife Catherine “Kate” recovered from abdominal surgery – just about the same time King Charles was diagnosed with cancer.

The Princess of Wales isn’t expected to resume her royal tasks until April or so, making it more challenging for the royals to keep up with the hundreds of charities.

His younger son Prince Harry, his younger brother Prince Andrew and his niece Princess Beatrice are also Counselors of State but are reportedly no longer called upon as they are “non-working royals.”

The king’s relationship with Prince Harry was strained even before his younger son and his spouse stepped down as senior royals in Jan. 2020 and moved outside of the United Kingdom. According to BBC, “the couple kept their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, but are no longer addressed as his or her royal highness.”

Prince Andrew no longer carries out royal duties as a result of scandals – although it is highly unlikely that King Charles will take away his brother’s royal title, according to People.
