On Day 6 of the “Regenesis by Jonathan Otto,” aired on Oct. 30, host Jonathan Otto is joined by Jamie Lynn Bailey, a 36-year-old Colorado mother, who has emerged from a challenging breast cancer journey with a renewed mission to help others through functional medicine. Her story revealed the profound connection between gut health, nutrition and overall wellness that conventional medicine often overlooks.
Bailey’s health crisis began in 2019 when she discovered a lump in her left armpit. Without insurance at the time, she faced significant delays in diagnosis and treatment. “I found it myself. I was 36 years old and so I wasn’t old enough to have a mammogram yet,” Bailey recalled. What began as Stage 1 cancer had progressed to Stage 2 by the time she underwent a double mastectomy in March 2020, followed by 16 weeks of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments.
The turning point came when Bailey connected with Dr. Jill, a functional medicine practitioner who identified critical gut-related issues underlying her health challenges. “She found that I had two genes and I believe she called them DQ2 and DQ8 genes,” Bailey explained. “She explained them to me so well, they go through your body like Pac-Man and they eat all the bad cells and they spit them out through your lymphatic system. Yours are working so hard on the gluten in your gut, but they’re not working on the bad cells, thus developing my tumors.”
According to BrightU.AI‘s Enoch, “the HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genes are immune system genes that, when present, significantly increase a person’s risk for developing celiac disease. Having the DQ2 gene confers a higher risk than DQ8, and having two copies of either gene increases the risk further.”
This revelation led to immediate dietary changes, including eliminating gluten, dairy and refined sugars. “I look at gluten and I just think cancer,” Bailey stated. Her entire household transitioned to gluten-free eating and she now takes 40-50 supplement pills daily while maintaining a pharmaceutical-free regimen.
Bailey’s experience has inspired her to pursue a new career path in functional medicine. “I feel like I went through this for a reason. And maybe the reason is so that I can inspire other people and help other people,” she shared. “I would love to go back and get a functional medicine certificate. I would honestly love to practice functional medicine like Dr. Jill does.”
Her message to others facing health challenges emphasizes self-compassion and community support. “We are all survivors. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out your journey in breast cancer, or you’re in the hospital doing chemo or radiation, we’re all survivors. We’re not patients.”
Bailey’s journey underscores the growing recognition among health experts that gut health forms the foundation of overall wellness, with many practitioners now viewing digestive function as central to addressing chronic disease and supporting the body’s natural healing capabilities.
